If you are anything like me, how can it possibly almost be time to usher in a new year! Did the year speed by for you too?
2009 will forever be remembered as the year of Africa here in my home. This past summer our son, David, then 13 years old, went to Tanzania to climb Kilimanjaro and take a safari on the Serengeti along with a small group from his Boy Scout troop. The beginning of the year saw the purchase of gear for the trek and many weekends spent on overnight hikes to prepare for the journey. He had an amazing time and plans to go back again. I think we may lose him to that adventuresome continent one day.
In addition to his excellent adventure, hubby and I had our own. We managed to get a few days alone and had a brilliant staycation at home. One child was in Africa, one in Oregon, and another at grandpa's house. We woke when we wanted, ate unbelievably well, went to an art fair, and enjoyed the quietness of the house, along with a beautiful walk on the beach.
Our daughter, Rebecca, age 16, went on a week long mission trip to Portland, Oregon. There was much training prior to going and more when she got there. I think the kids learned a lot about themselves and their faith along with meeting many interesting people on the streets of Portland.
Our youngest, Andrew, age 12, went to summer camp with his Boy Scout troop and earned his Swimming merit badge. This was something he worked very hard at over the several months prior to camp. He set the goal and with much encouragement from his parents and his scout master, he was able to achieve that goal. Now, he plans on going on the week-long canoe trip the troop takes in the spring.
Our cats continue to be special members of our family, even the one that brings us all sorts of grief. All three are cherished. Our male cat, Zach, had surgery this year and I am happy to report recovered well and is his old self again.
It is amazing to have the privilege to watch our children grow and mature each year. They are amazing human beings with many talents and dreams. They bring us so much joy and at times make us pull our own hair out, but that is as it should be. I look forward to 2010 and seeing what they accomplish and learn on their journey. I'll let you in on a couple of New Year's goals for myself next week as 2010 promises to be an extra special year on my journey.
Farewell 2009, you will always be remembered fondly. What is your best memory from 2009?

I know what you mean about this past year flying by! I can't even believe that Christmas is here and gone already, but I"m looking forward to the new year. I love new beginnings!
Bless you and your family this coming year!
Isn't it wonderful to watch your children develope into adults. Well not really adults yet but move from that all I want to do is play stage to I think I know what I want to be when I grow up stage.
I am know watching my grandchildren start that journey and it is so great. I am really looking forward to a whole new year.
HAPPY NEW YEAR
Happy New Year!
I think my favorite memory this year was watching my dad biking and swimming with the boys because last year he could barely move & I was worried this year it would be worse.
Sounds like you had a pretty exciting year! My best memory from 2009...uh, um, well, I'm not really sure. It's kinda hard to see the forest for the trees at the moment b/c of the latest basement disaster. I'll have to get back to you on that one. lol
Yes, that sounds like an amazing 2009! What great adventures and experiences that all three of your children had!
Hard to settle on just one great memory...one amazing world that opened up to me is this blog world with new blog friends! And to think that I had to ask my daughter what a blog was, when she shared hers (www.theluckiestmrs.blogspot.com) with me haha!
It really is amazing! such fun...only wish I had more "free" time to do it! I just became a part of the work force outside the home as a hygienist...which I love, but a part of me would be happy to be a "stay-at-home" full time artist/future grandma :o)
Again, so fun meeting you! (work starts next Monday, so wont be able to get around as much in blogland!)
Happy New Year or in Hawaiian:
Hau'oli Makahiki Hou! (sounds like "How..oh-lee...Mah-kah...hee-kee...Ho!" ...your Hawaiian pronunciation lesson for the day :o)
Blessings & Aloha!
Best memory of 2009? Hm. I'll have to think about that one. Hard. LOL.
Happy New Year!
