We took the kids to see Avatar in IMAX 3D on Saturday. I was smart enough to go online in the morning and pre-purchase our tickets for the 3:30 showing. When we got there at 2:30 it was obvious that they had sold out all showings hours earlier - people were being turned away at the box office. We rarely go to the movies, twice a year is our average. This is the second one we saw this year. Since we chose to do IMAX 3D it was extra expensive and ordering online added a $2.00 per person charge, so the total for 5 tickets was $92.50. I about fainted! I am very happy to report it was all worth it. Everyone loved it.
The 3D technology is AMAZING!!! I cannot say that enough - AMAZING!!! You must see it in 3D if you see it. When the lights went dark and the first preview came up it was in 3D and right from that moment until the end the 3D astounded me. The previews were for Alice in Wonderland and How to Train Your Dragon. Both will be offered in 3D and I will be seeing both. I am officially a 3D junkie after Avatar.
The movie itself was what I had expected Fern Gully grown up. The evil corporation is destroying a planet where the indigenous peoples are very connected to the plants and animals. A human is transformed through the "avatar" program into one of these peoples and learns their ways and falls in love with one of them. The whole time the corporation is using his information gathering to plot the take over of where these peoples live.
There is tons of action and violence, but little to no blood. The indigenous peoples are humanoids and they dress scantily although they are covered mostly and they are blue and grey striped. There is a mating scene which gave me pause. There is unsavory language in the movie as well. Our youngest is 12.5 and I was okay with him seeing this though I would not have taken him a year ago. That works for my family, but yours may have other standards and you will have to decide for yourselves.
The thing about this movie is you cannot wait for it to come to dvd. What is so special about this movie is the 3D technology and you won't get that at home like you will on the big screen.
Have you seen Avatar? If not, are you planning to see it?

My son wants to see that movie. I want to see New Moon. lol. Maybe we'll have to toss a coin!
Did you feel six from the 3D effects? I get motion sick easily.
I've seen the previews and it looks fun.
When I first heard about the movie, I wasn't too enthralled...the title didn't do it much justice...until I read your blog. Now I get it...LOL. I also saw a TV guide review of it, with the producer, and started getting interested in it after that too. Now I really want to see it!!! Thanks for the great summary!!
I have seen AVATAR. I love all 3 hours of it. I didn't see it in 3D because I have motion sickness issues.
It is Fern Gully all gorwn up. But wow how grown up was it? I love the visuals. All the effects. The story line. I just really enjoyed this movie. I go to the movies usually twice a year if that. I like to wait until it comes out on DVD then make my own popcorn and watch it as many times as I like.
I can not wait for this to be on DVD.
Not planning on seeing Avatar. Glad you enjoyed it.
Such a great review!
I think we will have to pass. My kids are 8 and 10 and the little one is so scared of all things 3D...plus now you have me thinking about that mating scene?
It will wait")
H4L is dying to go and see this movie. I must admit I too want to see it. We will not be watching the 3d version though. I have an eye malfunction and have no depth perception therefore i can not see 3d stuff. BUMMER!!! But i love your thoughts on the movie and can not wait to share mine!!
ps i too am totally shocked at movie prices!! Sometimes ridiculous!
This Ozarks farm chick would love to get off the Ponderosa one evening and go see it but I'll never get Hubby to go to this one. I'm so glad I popped in and enjoyed my visit.
You have a great New Year and may God bless ya'll!!!
The Husband and I saw it Sunday night, and WOW!! I think I said somewhere that it's not my favorite movie, but it is the BEST movie I've ever seen -- does that make sense? AMAZING is right!
We saw it in 3D, but I bet seeing it at an IMAX theater would have blown me away!
Glad you enjoyed it!

When I saw your blog post I immediately had to read what you thought. I bought tickets last night on line to go tomorrow Wednesday. The time was sold out for Tuesday. Really not my kind of movie but everyone raves about the special effects and 3D, we are also going to the IMax, definitely a splurge. I have heard it called the iPhone of movies. Thanks for sharing now I am really excited
I absolutely can't wait to see this movie - maybe my husband and I will go to see it this week... thanks for the recommendation!
I like your blog :-)
Oh I've read some other great reviews on this movie. Blowing away the box office in ticket sales here in Canada too. For me, I'll just wait for the DVD, getting out to a movie with a 3 1/2 year old at home just ain't gonna happen!
DS and Moon Boy saw it...both liked it but sure didn't beat their Star Wars infatuation :-) Glad you had a good time!
After reading your post I decided to see it. Thanks for this beautiful review!
Most people say they love it. I am doubtful for me but I'll probly go anyway.
We are going to the movies this afternoon. The Dads are going to see Avatar. The Moms & Kids are going to see Alvin & The Chipmunks. But, that means we get a ladies night out sometime soon. Perfect timing on your post :-)I'll let the Dads know.
We don't go to the movies often because it's so expensive. But at least you can say it was worth it!
I don't know if we will see this or not but if we do I will heed your advice and only see it in 3D.
Thanks, C; I appreciate your perspective on this movie. We had not planned on seeing it, and have not been swayed by any reviews to change our minds. Thanks for sharing!
Both of my sons want to see it and shhh so do I LOL..... we haven't had the time.
NOW I so want to go :)
IT looks so interesting and I heard the special effects are awesome!
My hubby and son went to see Avatar, while our son was home from college. And then our son went again with friends... I do look forward to seeing this one too :o)
I do like 3D movies too! so thanks for the heads up about Alice in Wonderland and How to Train Your Dragon...
And thanks for stopping and commenting! That is so neat that your hubby is part Hawaiian. All of my hubby's family (borther, sister's, extended family) are still in Hawaii... (actually, his grandpa is one of 22 children, so they are pretty spread out!) My husband is 4th generation Portuguese born on Hawaii. (And our son was born there too, when we were stationed there when my husband flew helicopters on Oahu.)
Blessings & Aloha!
