Did I get your attention? I have just started listening to
Eat, Pray, Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India, and Indonesia by Elizabeth Gilbert. The very first time I listened on my morning walk there was a phrase that stopped me dead in my tracks. The book is autobiographical and at the beginning there is a conversation between the author and her sister or perhaps a friend (downside of listening to books hard to go back and check the facts). The sister has just had a baby and the author is visiting. The new mom tells the author that having children is like getting a tattoo on your face, you better be real sure before you commit. Wow, that rang super true for me. While I think a child will give back way more than a tattoo ever would, it's still true. Having a child changes you for the better in many ways and perhaps for the worse in others. You give up things to be a parent, but of course you get back tons too. It's hard to be seen as anything other than a mom at times, just like having a tattoo on your face would be hard to ignore. I'm probably rambling at this point, but just wanted to share something that really struck me. What are your thoughts on the comparison?

Very insightful indeed but an unusual comparison. I can see her point though. Thanks for sharing!
Parenting takes us through stages. At first the tattoo is perfect; all I could want. Then, it changes somehow.
I'd never want that 'tattoo' lasered off my face but I'd sure like to change it's design sometimes. ;)
I agree with you. Once you are a parent it's hard to identify yourself as anything else and it changes others' perceptions of you as well.
Interesting analogy.
It does give you pause to think about it. While they are both permanent, I would say it's exactly the same. It would be nice if everyone was "real sure" and in a place to have a child before they did but in this world that doesn't always happen.
I'd like to think in those situations it still turns out for the best versus a tattoo you end up regretting.
Good point! That is very interesting. They both are permanent so better to be sure before deciding to have.
Hey I haven't got to that point yet thanks alot ROFL!!
Ok so my whole face must be a whole freakn tattoo with my 4 kids.
And probably another tattoo on my forehead that says accident waiting to happen proceed with caution LMAO!
They are the best tattoos that I have =)
the thing is there is no laser surgery to remove a kid
I have quite a few tattoos. I can see the analogy from a permanence standpoint but you get more say in the sort of tattoo you want. You can make it absolutely the design you want. You can cover it up with concealer & not have to deal with it. You don't have to worry about it wandering off when your back is turned.
It's definitely a permanent life altering change!
Yes, and my three tattoos are butterflies!
