Tonight's dinner conversation focused on dd-15's talk with her high school counselor - this talk was at dd's request. Dd is planning on taking 5 AP classes next year, 11th grade, along with an upper level math class. WHAT!!! Now, don't get me wrong, she is one smart cookie, but WHY!!?? Why would she overload herself like that in addition to her 3 hours of daily opera conservatory classes? I think the answer is because she can. If the old saying is right, "Success comes in cans" then she will be very successful in life.
I am proud that she is so interested in different areas that she would want to take AP Physics, AP French, and memorize opera arias all in the same day. I am excited that learning really is something she thrives on. I am extremely pleased that she does well academically and is also drawn to the arts.
I am, however, a little worried that she will burn herself out as a junior in high school. She of course poo-poo's such a thought. Oh to be 15 again, NOT REALLY! Her eyes are on the prize - getting into the college of her choice (at the moment University of Indiana - great opera program, but need to check out physics dept.), going into said college with lots of college credits, and double majoring in classical voice and physics. Now, is that too much to ask? I think for many it would be, but this girl has a shot.
I am staunchly supportive of her dreams, but I do try and inject realism from time to time. But, going back to that she is 15 thing - she cannot be bothered with reality.
So, if in the future, you hear of an opera singing physicist, you can be pretty confident that she is my dd.

What's that saying about idle hands...well you certainly don't have to worry about that where dd is concerned. She sounds incredibly smart and motivated.
Sounds like a challenge...but exciting that she is up for it. Do they all require summer work? That is what changed some of my kids to take less AP classes....
Wow! An opera singing physicist. Cool combo! :) No worries. She'll find her way. Just be there to help when she wants it. With the planning and scheduling, of course. It sounds like she will be miles ahead of us soon!
That is really impressive! I wish her the best of luck!
